Windows Trial License on VPS and Rules of Use

When ordering a VPS with the Windows operating system, the server is often provided with a trial license. This format allows users to start working without immediate license costs and to test the server’s capabilities in practice.

What a Windows trial license means

A trial license is an official version of Windows Pro or Windows Server provided by Microsoft for temporary use. It has no functional limitations and allows full use of the operating system for a defined period.

On virtual servers, Windows Server is typically used, as this edition is designed for server workloads, remote access via RDP, and enterprise software usage. This option is convenient for project testing, development, or checking software compatibility before purchasing a license.

Validity period and usage specifics

Trial period duration

In most cases, the trial license is valid for 30 days. Under Microsoft’s terms, this period may be extended up to 180 days. Throughout this time, the system operates stably and receives security updates.

Limitations after expiration

If the license is not activated after the trial period ends, the system will continue to function but with certain limitations. Users may notice the inability to change personalization settings, a black desktop background, a persistent notification about an unactivated copy of Windows, and the cessation of security updates.

Impact on server operation

From a technical perspective, the trial version is no different from the licensed one. The server can be used to install software, run services, and work via RDP without performance restrictions.

How to activate a Windows license via the customer portal

After testing is complete or before the trial period expires, a commercial Windows license must be activated. This can be done through the user’s customer portal.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your customer account on the website.
  2. Go to the orders section and open the list of virtual servers.
  3. Select the VPS for which the license needs to be activated.
  4. Create a new support request with the subject “Windows license activation”.
  5. In the message, specify the order number or server IP address and the Windows version to be licensed.

After the request is processed, an invoice will be issued. The license cost is usually added to the monthly VPS fee. To complete activation, support specialists may require access to the server.

Upgrading from a trial version to a full license usually does not require reinstalling the operating system, but in some cases a server reboot may be necessary.

Summary

A Windows trial license on a VPS allows you to quickly deploy a server and evaluate its capabilities without additional upfront costs. To avoid limitations and security issues, it is important to monitor the trial period and activate the license in time.
